Lucy Mom Akita - Shepherd Dog

The mom -- we named her Lucy -- probably was raised around cattle. After she was abandoned, she stayed in the pasture with a neighbor's cows until the cows were sold. If she saw someone outside, she would visit with them, then go back to the cows when the person left. Whenever a cow was calving, Lucy stayed nearby, as though standing guard. The cows were quite comfortable with her presence, even around their newborns. My husband had begun feeding her, away from our house, when we realized that she did not belong to a neighbor. Once the cows were gone, Lucy migrated to our front yard, and we did not have the heart to chase her away. When the neighborhood kids were out playing, Lucy ran with them. When it became apparent that Lucy would soon have pups, we built a doghouse for her and put her in our backyard. She is very playful, minds quite well, and appears to be highly intelligent. It is with great regret that we are parting with her. Lucy is now at the rescue…above was written by the family that saved her from starvation and worse. She is safe now and looking for the right home. Her pups are listed separately. 4/3/12 Pups have all been adopted, but Lucy is a great dog just waiting for her own forever family.
