If your classifieds usage is done for more than to clean the garage for the spring, you need to be conscious about how you are going about the process of using classified ads.
There is no reason you should be spending an abhorrent amount of time working on perfecting your classified ads and making sure each one hits just exactly the right demographic. That’s not to say that you shouldn’t shoot for the right buyer that is going to have to have your item, but we don’t want your classifieds listings to turn into a full-time job.
For example, growing up, my father used to own a sports and Hot Wheels collectibles business that morphed several times from a fun hobby for the two of us together to a baseball card showcase vendor to a store in a strip mall to a flea market booth to a online listing to an auction site to an online classifieds site.
By the time I was in high school, I could rattle off the values and distinctions between thousands of toy cars, figures, playsets and sports cards. However, the joy of collecting those things had all but vanished because it had become a full-time job for me to supply all the online content for my father’s small, burgeoning business.
Rather than working smarter, I worked harder. I stayed up until the wee hours of the night writing and processing through in-depth listings. It never occurred to 14-or-15-year-old me to cut down on the ordeal by streamlining the process.
Finally, my dad found me asleep at the computer desk one morning where I had apparently passed out the night before. When he asked why I didn’t go to bed, I told him about how it had become a habit for me to stay up to finish everything up. He gave me one of those loving father grins and told me we were going to find a way to make things easier/quicker.
Together we ended up compiling four or five different template computer documents that just became a fill-in-the-blank for the description of each item. Suddenly, I was doing twice as much work in half the time.
Take a lesson from my teenage self and streamline your classifieds listings with the usage of a template that will allow you to cut the amount of time it takes you to construct your classifieds ads. You don’t have to rewrite the same stuff over and over. With a couple of templates (depending on how varied the products you list are), you can trim down the time and effort it takes for you to list your classified ads.
Also, if you ever have to re-list your items, you should copy and paste your classifieds’ descriptions into a Word document that you can save and have available if you ever want to quickly re-list an item. This will help trim away the excess time you spend re-typing stuff two, three or twenty times.
Hopefully, these couple of tips will help you trim away the fat and just get right to the meat of placing your classified ads so you can post more classifieds in less time.
