Buying Safely With Local Classifieds

Before going out to the local store and buying something brand new that is going to quickly depreciate in value, why would you not take a gander at the local classifieds try to buy used items?

Whether you are buying or selling used cars, furniture, clothing, collectibles or trying to find a new rescued puppy to become a member of the family, there is no better way to do that quickly and easily than with local classifieds.

Not only will you often find much better deals when buying from local classified ads, but you will also have the opportunity to check out the items before buying. For example, if you are in the market for a used car, you will be able to test drive the car with more freedom, as well as take the car to a mechanic before buying it. And if you are trying to sell a car, you’re going to get better money selling through local classifieds rather than trying to trade your used car in at a dealership.

You can save money and get quality items (even name brands) from local classifieds, but you also want to protect yourself as best you can. There is an inherent risk when buying from local classifieds ads due to the face-to-face interaction that is necessary.

You want to equip yourself with the knowledge to keep you safe in any and all situations before just leaping into the first good deal you find. Dealing locally definitely helps, but we also recommend you always talk on the phone with the seller before agreeing on anything.

Ask to have a photo sent with an everyday common item just to assure that the other person has the item and isn’t trying to lure you into a trap with some item they don’t have. Ask a seller to send a picture of the iPhone 5 you are interested beside a pen because you want to compare the length. While everyone has a pen lying around the house, there aren’t a number of pictures online of iPhones beside pens that the false seller can swipe.

After you are sure that the item is real and something you are interested in and you agree on a price or want to see the pet, car or item in person, always meet in a neutral and public place during the day. Don’t put yourself in a horror movie scene. Don’t meet in a dimly-lit place deep in the woods, off a dirt road at night or anything that you don’t feel comfortable with.

And it’s also a good idea to bring a friend along for the trip. You will feel more comfortable and multiple people is likely to discourage any illegal/unsafe activity. If you aren’t able to have a friend join you when buying from local classifieds ads, you should always tell someone where you are going when buying the item.

Though we don’t suspect you will have any issues while buying through local classifieds on recycler.com, there have been issues with people responding to Craigslist ads in the past and we would rather you be safe than sorry. Just remember…if it seems too good to be true, it, unfortunately, probably is. Stay safe!
