The Pontiac GTO is believed by some classic car enthusiasts to be the model that started the muscle car generation. Though there were other muscle cars previously, none captured the market and the imaginations of sports car drivers across the country the way that the Pontiac GTO did.
The first generation of the GTO began in 1964 and lasted through the 1968 model.
By the time, this 1969 version of the GTO came around, the model had received a restyling, extra safety features and some more beef under the hood. Pontiac was losing market share and didn’t sale as well as the Chevrolet Chevelle or the Plymouth Roadrunner, but the ’69 GTO would later become one of the iconic muscle cars of the late 1960s-early 1970s.
